Door stripping & door dipping.
We strip painted doors back to bare timber at our workshop in Honley, near Huddersfield. A standard four-panel internal pine door starts from £60, including neutralising and drying. External and stained-oak doors are £80–£95. Most doors are ready in 7–10 working days, and we collect free within 20 miles.
Doors stripped properly, not just quickly
Most doors that come into Crossley Mills are Victorian and Edwardian four-panel pine doors from Yorkshire terraces. Many have been painted six, seven, sometimes nine times, until the mouldings have filled in and the panels look flat. Stripping takes every layer off and brings the timber and the detail back.
We dip-strip most doors in the bath. It is the quickest way to clear paint out of mouldings, beading and panel corners that a heat gun or scraper never reaches. When a door is fragile, with loose joints, thin veneer or glass that can't come out, we strip it by hand instead, and we tell you which method we will use before we start.
Every door is neutralised and dried before it goes home, ready for wax, oil or paint. If you'd rather not finish it yourself, we can: waxed pine, oiled oak, or a heritage paint colour from Farrow & Ball or Little Greene.
Renovating a whole house? We strip full sets of doors for homeowners, landlords and developers. Stripped as one batch they work out at around £55–£80 per door depending on condition, and the batch usually takes about a fortnight.

WhatsApp Daniel a photo or bring the piece to Crossley Mills. Paint build-up, condition and the finish you want all affect the price, so we quote each piece after seeing it.
Strip
Sound pieces go in the stripping bath, which gets paint out of mouldings and corners a scraper never reaches. Fragile or veneered pieces are stripped by hand. Detail is always hand-finished.
Neutralise and dry
Every piece is neutralised and dried before it leaves, so it goes back into the house as sound, bare timber.
Finish, or take it home bare
Take it home ready for wax, oil or paint, or have us finish it with the Osmo, Fiddes, Farrow & Ball and Little Greene products we stock.

How much does it cost to strip a door?

Is dip stripping bad for doors?
Not when it's done properly. The risks with dipping are old glue in the joints and thin veneers, so every door is checked first. Sound pine doors dip very well. Veneered or fragile doors, and doors with glass that can't come out, are stripped by hand instead. Every door is neutralised and dried before it goes home.
How long does door stripping take?
Most single doors are stripped, neutralised, dried and ready in 7–10 working days. A full set of doors usually takes about a fortnight. Spring and early autumn are the busiest times, so book early if you need doors back for a fixed date.
Should I take the handles and hinges off first?
Yes, please remove handles, letterplates, knockers, locks and hinges if you can, and keep them safe. If a fitting is seized or painted in, leave it on and tell us when you drop the door off.
Can you strip a uPVC or composite door?
No. We only strip wood and metal. uPVC, composite and laminate doors can't be stripped, because the process would damage them.
Do you collect, or do I drop it off?
Both. Smaller pieces are usually dropped at Crossley Mills in Honley. For larger jobs we run a Tuesday and Friday collection round, with no charge within 20 miles of the workshop, which covers Huddersfield, Holmfirth, Honley, Halifax, Wakefield and Leeds. Customers further away send pieces by overnight courier.
