Furniture stripping & dipping.
We strip paint, varnish and old lacquer from pine and hardwood furniture at our workshop near Huddersfield. Sound pine goes in the stripping bath; antiques, veneers and glued joints are stripped by hand. A dining suite of six chairs and a table typically costs £320–£480. Most pieces take 7–10 working days.
Bath or hand: the right method for the piece
Pine dressers, farmhouse tables, chests of drawers, church pews, kitchen chairs: most of the furniture we strip was painted or varnished decades ago and has been waiting for someone to bring the grain back. Stripping takes it back to bare wood so it can be waxed, oiled or repainted properly.
The method depends on the piece. Solid pine usually goes in the stripping bath, which clears paint from carvings, turned legs and corners quickly and evenly. Antiques, veneered pieces and furniture held together with old animal glue are stripped by hand, because a long soak can lift veneer and loosen joints. We look at every piece before choosing.
After stripping, each piece is neutralised and dried. Then you can take it home bare or have us finish it: wax, hard wax oil, lacquer or a heritage paint colour, using the same products we sell in the shop.
We also strip staircases, banisters and spindles. Staircases are quoted per job, depending on the number of balusters, newels and the handrail.

WhatsApp Daniel a photo or bring the piece to Crossley Mills. Paint build-up, condition and the finish you want all affect the price, so we quote each piece after seeing it.
Strip
Sound pieces go in the stripping bath, which gets paint out of mouldings and corners a scraper never reaches. Fragile or veneered pieces are stripped by hand. Detail is always hand-finished.
Neutralise and dry
Every piece is neutralised and dried before it leaves, so it goes back into the house as sound, bare timber.
Finish, or take it home bare
Take it home ready for wax, oil or paint, or have us finish it with the Osmo, Fiddes, Farrow & Ball and Little Greene products we stock.

Turnaround
Most single pieces are ready in 7–10 working days. Dining suites and larger jobs usually take 2–3 weeks.

How much does it cost to strip furniture?

Will dipping damage antique furniture?
It can, which is why we don't dip everything. Veneered pieces and furniture held with old animal glue can lift or loosen in a long soak, so we strip those by hand. Solid pine furniture dips very well. We check each piece and tell you which method we'll use before starting.
Can you strip varnish as well as paint?
Yes. We remove paint, varnish, lacquer, shellac, stain and old wax. Varnished pine and oak often come up beautifully once the yellowed finish is off.
Can you refinish the furniture after stripping?
Yes. We can wax, oil, lacquer or paint it in the workshop. For pine we usually recommend wax or a hard wax oil; for painted pieces, Farrow & Ball or Little Greene.
Do you collect, or do I drop it off?
Both. Smaller pieces are usually dropped at Crossley Mills in Honley. For larger jobs we run a Tuesday and Friday collection round, with no charge within 20 miles of the workshop, which covers Huddersfield, Holmfirth, Honley, Halifax, Wakefield and Leeds. Customers further away send pieces by overnight courier.
