We strip paint and old enamel from cast-iron fireplaces, surrounds and inserts back to bare iron, treat the rust, then return them bare or finished in waxed black, clear lacquer or high-temperature enamel. Cast-iron inserts start from around £90 to strip and refinish, and fireplaces usually take 2–3 weeks.
Fireplaces back to the casting
Victorian and Edwardian cast-iron fireplaces turn up all over Yorkshire, often boarded up behind a 1970s gas fire and only found when the chimney breast is opened. Most have been painted many times, which hides the detail in the casting.
We strip fireplaces back to bare metal so that detail shows again. Paint, powder coating and old enamel all come off. Because bare cast iron starts to rust quickly, rust is dealt with before the fireplace leaves the workshop.
Then it's your choice of finish: left bare for you to black-lead, waxed black, clear lacquer to show the raw iron, or a high-temperature enamel for fireplaces that will be used.
Fireplaces are heavy. Inserts can usually be dropped off, while full surrounds are often easier on our collection round.

What is the best way to strip paint from a cast-iron fireplace?
For a heavily painted fireplace, a professional strip gets everything off evenly, including paint deep in the casting that wire brushes and heat guns miss. It also means the rust is treated straight away. For a lightly painted insert that's still fitted, a chemical stripper and brass brush can work at home.
Do I need to remove the fireplace?
Yes, it needs to come to the workshop. Inserts are usually easy to take out; full surrounds are heavy, so a builder or fireplace fitter often removes them. We can collect on our Tuesday and Friday round.
What finish can you put on a stripped fireplace?
We can return it bare for black-leading, or finish it in waxed black, clear lacquer, or high-temperature enamel for fireplaces that will be lit.
How long does fireplace stripping take?

Do you collect, or do I drop it off?
Both. Smaller pieces are usually dropped at Crossley Mills in Honley. For larger jobs we run a Tuesday and Friday collection round, with no charge within 20 miles of the workshop, which covers Huddersfield, Holmfirth, Honley, Halifax, Wakefield and Leeds. Customers further away send pieces by overnight courier.
