Door Stripping Halifax: Stone-Terrace and Chapel Doors

Door stripping for Halifax and Calderdale homes is done at Double Dipper's workshop in Honley, and Halifax is inside our free 20-mile collection area. We dip or hand-strip painted doors from stone terraces, weavers' cottages and converted chapels, then neutralise and dry them. Internal pine doors start from £60 and most are ready in 7–10 working days.
- Halifax is well within our free collection radius, so there's no collection charge on larger jobs.
- Internal pine doors are from £60; external and stained-oak doors are £80–£95.
- Big chapel doors and glazed doors are assessed first and stripped by hand where needed.
- We strip wood and metal only, so fireplaces, radiators and gates can come too.
What sort of doors do Calderdale stone houses have?
Mostly solid softwood doors made to be painted, fitted into thick stone walls. Calderdale grew on wool and cloth, and its older housing follows the valleys: hand-loom weavers' cottages on the hillsides, stone terraces packed along the valley bottoms beside the mills, and grander Victorian houses once the mill owners had money to spend.
- Weavers' cottages in the hill villages above Halifax and along the Calder, many with long rows of upper windows that once lit the looms. Doors here are often ledged-and-braced or simple panelled pine.
- Stone terraces in and around Halifax, Sowerby Bridge, Elland and Brighouse, usually with four-panel pine doors throughout.
- Model housing and villas, such as the Victorian streets of Akroydon and West Hill Park, built by the town's mill-owning families, with better-quality joinery.
Almost all of it has been painted, often many times, and almost all of it strips back well.
Why do stone-terrace doors stick and lose their detail?
Because every coat of paint adds thickness. A door that fitted its frame in the Victorian years can carry enough gloss by now to bind on the frame and stick in damp weather. The same build-up fills the mouldings round each panel until the door looks flat.

Planing the edges to make it close takes away original timber you can't put back. Stripping removes the paint instead, so the door often fits better and the mouldings come back sharp. For older doors, our guide to stripping a Victorian door without damaging the wood explains what we check first.
Can you strip chapel doors?
Yes, if they're wood and they'll fit in the workshop. Calderdale has a remarkable number of nonconformist chapels, and many have been converted to homes. Their doors tend to be big: tall pairs of panelled doors, often pitch pine or oak, sometimes with glazing or ironwork.
Doors like that are assessed one at a time. Solid, sound doors can be dipped. Anything with loose joints, glass that has to stay in or old repairs is stripped by hand. External and stained-oak doors are priced at £80–£95, and very large or unusual doors are quoted from a photo. The same goes for pews, panelling and other chapel joinery: send us a picture.

How much does door stripping cost in Halifax?
The same as at the workshop, with free collection inside our 20-mile radius:

|---|---|
| Internal four-panel pine door | From £60 |
| External or stained-oak door | £80–£95 |
| Whole house of doors, stripped as a batch | About £55–£80 per door |
All prices include neutralising and drying. See the full door stripping price guide, or read about our door stripping service.

Do you collect across Calderdale?
Halifax, Elland, Brighouse and Sowerby Bridge are comfortably inside our free 20-mile collection area. If you're further up the Calder Valley, ring us with your postcode and we'll confirm whether it's free collection or a quoted van run. Smaller pieces can always be dropped at Unit 3, Crossley Mills, Honley, HD9 6PL, open Monday to Friday 9–5 and Saturday 10–2.
Before collection, take off the handles, hinges and locks, label each door with its room, and tell us about any glass or damage.
How long will the doors be away?
Most doors are ready in 7–10 working days. A whole house of doors usually takes about a fortnight, and bigger pieces such as fireplaces or gates usually take 2–3 weeks.
Should you wax or paint the doors afterwards?
Either works, and it comes down to the house. Waxed or oiled pine suits a cottage with bare stone and beams, and it shows off the grain you've just uncovered. In a Victorian terrace or a villa, the doors were usually painted or grained from new, so a fresh coat of a heritage colour is just as authentic, and it now sits on crisp mouldings rather than decades of build-up. Our guide to painting or waxing stripped pine doors goes through the options.
What about paint stripping beyond doors?
Stone houses in Halifax often have cast-iron fireplaces, iron gates and old radiators under layers of paint too. We take metal back to bare, treat the rust, and finish it the way you want: bare, clear lacquer, waxed black, high-temperature enamel or oil gloss. Radiators must be drained and disconnected by a plumber first. Painted pine furniture, such as chests and dressers, goes through our furniture stripping service.
Older paint can contain lead, so avoid sanding or burning it indoors. Our guide to safely stripping lead paint from a Victorian front door explains the risks.
