Oak Door Stripping: Why Oak Needs Different Care to Pine

Oak door stripping needs more care than pine because oak is a dense, open-grained hardwood full of natural tannins that can darken or stain if it's handled carelessly. At Double Dipper, we check every oak door first, choose dipping or hand stripping to suit it, then neutralise and dry it. Stained-oak and external doors cost £80–£95.
- Oak's tannins can react with harsh treatment and some metals, so the stripping has to be controlled.
- Oak's open grain traps paint and stain, which makes careful hand-finishing important.
- Solid oak doors can often be dipped; oak-veneered doors are usually stripped by hand.
- External and stained-oak doors are £80–£95, and most are ready in 7–10 working days.
Why does oak need different care from pine?
Because oak behaves differently in almost every way that matters when you strip it. Pine is a softwood with a fairly closed grain and pale, even colour. Oak is a hardwood with a much more open grain, a heavier weight and a high natural tannin content. Those three things change how it reacts to stripping and how it looks afterwards.

A method that suits a painted pine door can leave oak darker, patchy or with paint still sitting in the pores. That doesn't mean oak can't be stripped. It strips very well when it's done with care, and a stripped oak door is one of the best-looking things you can put back in a period house.
What are tannins, and why do they matter?
Tannins are natural compounds in oak that give it its colour, its smell and much of its durability. They're a big part of why oak lasts so long outdoors. But they're also reactive.
- Strong treatment can darken oak. Oak left too long under harsh stripping conditions can come out darker or greyer than you expect. That's why oak needs a controlled process, and why neutralising afterwards matters so much.
- Iron and tannin make black stains. When oak's tannins meet iron and moisture, they can leave blue-black marks. Old steel screws, nails and ironmongery can cause this, as can steel wool used during DIY stripping.
- Uneven colour. Areas that had different finishes, repairs or water damage can show up once the paint is off.
None of this is a reason to leave an oak door painted. It's a reason to have it stripped by someone who knows how oak behaves.
What about stained or varnished oak doors?
Stained oak is common, especially on doors from the early twentieth century, when darker finishes were fashionable. The varnish and paint on top can be removed. The stain is harder, because it has soaked into the open grain. Stripping will usually lighten a stained oak door considerably, but some colour may stay in the pores.
That's usually no bad thing. A little old colour in the grain gives the door depth and keeps it looking its age. If you want a lighter or more even tone, talk to us before we start, and we'll tell you honestly what's likely to be possible for your door.

Should an oak door be dipped or hand-stripped?
It depends on how the door is made. We look at every oak door before we decide:

- Solid oak doors in sound condition can often be dipped, then neutralised and dried.
- Oak-veneered doors, common from the 1920s onwards, have a thin layer of oak over another timber. The veneer can lift, so these are usually stripped by hand.
- Doors with glued or loose joints are hand-stripped, because the bath can soften old glue.
- Doors with leaded or stained glass that can't be taken out are stripped by hand around the glass.
We tell you which method we'll use before we start. For more on how we choose, read dip stripping vs hand stripping: which suits your piece.

Why does oak door stripping cost more than pine?
Stripping an external or stained-oak door costs £80–£95, compared with from £60 for an internal four-panel pine door. The difference reflects the extra time and care oak takes. Oak doors are heavier to handle, they're often external doors with thicker sections and more paint or varnish, and they need closer watching throughout, from the bath to the hand-finishing.
| Door | Price |
|---|---|
| Internal four-panel pine door | From £60 |
| External or stained-oak door | £80–£95 |
| A whole house of doors, stripped as one batch | About £55–£80 per door |
Every price includes neutralising and drying. The full list is on our door stripping price guide.
Can you strip an oak door yourself?
You can, but oak is less forgiving than pine. Paint gets deep into the open grain and is hard to pick out with a scraper. Heat can scorch the surface, and sanding hard to remove it takes away the patina that makes an old oak door worth keeping. Steel wool can leave black tannin stains. On older doors, the paint may contain lead, which shouldn't be sanded or burned indoors.
If you're taking on a small, lightly painted oak piece, work slowly, avoid steel wool and let the wood dry well before finishing. For a front door or a door with lots of paint, sending it to a workshop is usually quicker and kinder to the wood.
How should you finish a stripped oak door?
Oak takes oil and wax beautifully. A hardwax oil brings out the grain and gives good protection, while a traditional wax gives a softer sheen. External oak doors need a finish made for outdoor use, and it will need topping up over time. You can also paint oak, though most people who have a solid oak door stripped want to see the timber.
We can finish your door in the workshop with the products we sell, including Osmo and Fiddes, or you can take it home bare and ready to finish. Browse our wood finishes for oils and waxes.
How long does it take?
Most oak doors are ready in 7–10 working days, the same as other doors. We collect free within 20 miles of our Honley workshop, which covers Huddersfield, Holmfirth, Halifax, Wakefield, Leeds, Bradford and Barnsley. From further away, you can drop off at the workshop, courier smaller items, or have a van collection quoted. Take the handles, hinges and lock off before the door travels, unless they're seized.
