Door Stripping Harrogate: Victorian Villa Doors and Fireplaces

Door Stripping Harrogate: Victorian Villa Doors and Fireplaces

Door stripping for Harrogate homes is done at Double Dipper's workshop in Honley, near Huddersfield. We take villa doors to bare timber and cast-iron fireplace inserts to bare iron, neutralising wood and rust-treating metal. Internal pine doors start from £60, fireplace inserts from around £90, and you can drop off, courier smaller pieces or book a quoted van collection.

  • Harrogate sits outside our free 20-mile collection area, so it's drop-off, overnight courier for smaller items, or a van collection quoted with the job.
  • Internal pine doors are from £60; heavy external or stained-oak front doors are £80–£95.
  • Cast-iron fireplace inserts are stripped, rust-treated and refinished from around £90.
  • Most doors are ready in 7–10 working days; fireplaces usually take 2–3 weeks.

Why do Harrogate villas have so much painted joinery?

Because the town was largely built in one confident burst, and it was built to impress. Once the railway arrived in the Victorian years, Harrogate grew from a scatter of spa inns into a resort of stone villas, terraces and hotels, laid out around the open grass of the Stray. Builders fitted those houses with generous joinery: tall panelled doors, deep architraves, window shutters and broad staircases.

Much of that timber was pine meant to be grained or painted, and a century of redecorating has left it buried. Around West Park, the Duchy, Valley Gardens and the streets off Leeds Road and Otley Road, you'll find doors where the panel mouldings have been rounded off by layer after layer of gloss. Plenty of the bigger villas were later split into flats or run as guest houses, which usually meant more paint, not less.

What makes a Harrogate front door different?

Size and weight, mostly. A villa front door is often taller and thicker than a terrace door, with bolection mouldings, a fanlight above and sometimes etched or stained glass in the upper panels. Some are pine, some pitch pine, and a few are oak or another hardwood under a dark stain.

That affects how we strip them:

  • Sound, solid doors go in the stripping bath, which clears paint from every moulding and corner in one go.
  • Doors with glass that can't come out, loose joints or veneered faces are stripped by hand, so nothing is put at risk.
  • External and stained-oak doors are priced at £80–£95, and we check the timber and any glazing with you before quoting.

We tell you which method we'll use before we start. If you're weighing it up, our guide to dip stripping vs hand stripping explains the difference.

Can you strip the fireplaces as well?

Yes, the cast-iron parts. Harrogate villas often have a marble or timber surround in the main rooms, with a cast-iron insert in the opening, and smaller all-iron grates upstairs. Over the years many of those inserts were painted, sometimes in heat-resistant paint and sometimes in whatever gloss was to hand.

We strip the iron back to bare metal, which brings back the cast detail in the frets and panels, then treat any rust before it leaves. You choose the finish: bare, clear lacquer, waxed black, high-temperature enamel or oil gloss. A cast-iron insert starts from around £90 through our cast-iron fireplace stripping service.

We strip wood and metal only, so a marble surround stays in the house. A timber surround can come to the workshop with the insert.

How much does door and fireplace stripping cost?

Harrogate customers pay the same workshop prices as everyone else:

ItemPrice
Internal four-panel pine doorFrom £60
External or stained-oak front door£80–£95
Whole house of doors, stripped as a batchAbout £55–£80 per door
Cast-iron fireplace insert, stripped and refinishedFrom around £90
Victorian or Edwardian staircase£650–£1,200

Door prices include neutralising and drying. As Harrogate is outside the free collection area, a van collection is quoted separately. The full list is on our door stripping price guide.

How do Harrogate customers get pieces to the workshop?

Pick whichever suits the size of the job:

  1. Drop off at Unit 3, Crossley Mills, Honley, HD9 6PL. One or two doors fit in most estate cars.
  2. Overnight courier for smaller pieces, such as a bedroom fireplace or a cupboard door. Pack them well and photograph them before they go.
  3. Van collection for a full set of doors, a staircase or a heavy insert, quoted with the job.

We're open Monday to Friday 9am–5pm and Saturday 10am–2pm. Ring ahead so we know what's coming.

How long will my doors be away?

Most doors are back in 7–10 working days, and a whole house of doors usually takes about a fortnight. Fireplaces, radiators and other larger pieces usually take 2–3 weeks. If you've got decorators or a fitter booked, tell us the date when you ask for a quote.

Is my house listed or in a conservation area?

A good share of central Harrogate sits in conservation areas, and some villas are listed. If yours is listed, check with the council's conservation officer before you remove or alter original doors and fireplaces. Stripping keeps the original joinery rather than replacing it, which is usually the outcome everyone wants.

Older paint can also contain lead, so don't sand or burn it off indoors. Our guide to safely stripping lead paint from a Victorian front door explains why.
