Door Stripping Bradford: Saltaire to Manningham Mill-Town Doors

Door stripping for Bradford homes is done at Double Dipper's workshop in Honley, and Bradford is inside our free 20-mile collection area. We dip or hand-strip painted doors back to bare timber, then neutralise and dry them. Internal pine doors start from £60, external doors are £80–£95, and most doors are ready in 7–10 working days.
- Bradford is within our free collection radius, so there's no collection charge on larger jobs.
- Cottage and terrace doors are usually solid pine and dip well; glazed or fragile doors are stripped by hand.
- A whole house of doors works out at about £55–£80 per door and usually takes about a fortnight.
- Every door comes back neutralised, dried and ready to wax, oil or paint.
What kinds of doors do Bradford houses have?
Bradford's period housing was shaped by the wool trade, and that shows in the doors. The same industry that built the mills built two very different kinds of home: modest stone cottages and terraces for the people who worked in them, and large villas for the merchants and mill owners who ran them.

- Mill workers' cottages and terraces, in Saltaire, Shipley, Thornton, Great Horton and the streets around the old mills, mostly with plain four-panel or ledged pine doors.
- Merchants' villas in Manningham, Heaton and Frizinghall, with taller panelled doors, heavy front doors, glazed vestibule doors and bigger staircases.
- Later Victorian and Edwardian terraces and semis across the suburbs, with panelled doors in the style of their day.
Nearly all of it is local sandstone outside and pine inside, and nearly all of that pine has been painted at least once.
Can Saltaire cottage doors be stripped?
Yes. Saltaire was built as a model village for mill workers in the Victorian years and is now a World Heritage Site, but inside the houses the doors are ordinary, well-made softwood joinery. Most are solid and dip cleanly, bringing back sharp mouldings that a century of gloss has softened.
Much of the village is listed and sits in a conservation area. If you live there, check with Bradford Council's conservation team before you change original doors or fittings. Stripping and refinishing the doors you already have is usually the gentlest way to keep them.
What about the big Manningham and Heaton villas?
These are the doors that most reward stripping. A merchant's villa might have a pair of glazed inner doors, a heavy front door and a run of tall panelled doors off the hall, often painted over when the house was split into flats or modernised. Some are pine, some pitch pine, and a few are hardwood under a dark stain.
Sound doors go in the stripping bath. Doors with stained or etched glass that can't come out, loose joints or veneer are stripped by hand. We'll tell you which we recommend before we start, and our guide on stripping a Victorian door without damaging the wood explains what we look for.

How much does door stripping cost in Bradford?
The same as anyone else pays at the workshop, with free collection inside our 20-mile radius:
| Door | Price |
|---|---|
| Internal four-panel pine door | From £60 |
| External or stained-oak front door | £80–£95 |
| Whole house of doors, stripped as a batch | About £55–£80 per door |
Prices include neutralising and drying. The final figure depends on size, paint build-up and condition, so we quote from a photo. See the full door stripping price guide.

Do you collect doors from Bradford?
Yes. Bradford is inside our free 20-mile collection area, so a full set of doors is collected at no extra charge. For one or two doors, some people find it just as easy to drop them at Unit 3, Crossley Mills, Honley, HD9 6PL. We're open Monday to Friday 9am–5pm and Saturday 10am–2pm.
Before collection day:
- Take off handles, hinges, locks and letterplates, and bag them up together.
- Label every door with its room, so each one goes back in the opening it was made for.
- Let us know about glass, loose joints or damage so we can plan the right method.
How long does it take?
Most doors are ready in 7–10 working days, and a whole house of doors usually takes about a fortnight. If you've got a joiner or decorator booked, give us the date when you ask for a quote and we'll tell you honestly whether we can meet it.
Can you strip fireplaces and gates too?
Yes. Plenty of Bradford villas and terraces still have cast-iron fireplace inserts, bedroom grates and iron gates or railings under old paint. We take them back to bare metal, treat the rust before they leave, and finish them bare, in clear lacquer, waxed black, high-temperature enamel or oil gloss. Fireplace inserts start from around £90 through our cast-iron fireplace stripping service, and larger metal pieces usually take 2–3 weeks.
Why not strip them at home?
Because it's slow, messy and rarely gets the mouldings clean. A four-panel door with decades of gloss can take a full weekend with a heat gun and scraper. Older paint may also contain lead, which shouldn't be sanded or burned indoors. Our guide to safely stripping lead paint from a Victorian front door covers the risks. Sending doors to the workshop keeps the dust and fumes out of your house.
Once they're back, you can wax, oil or repaint them. We can also finish them in the workshop with Osmo, Fiddes, Farrow & Ball or Little Greene, the same products in our wood finishes shop.
