Door Dipping Sheffield: Stripped Pine Doors from £60
Door dipping for Sheffield homes means sending your painted doors to Double Dipper's workshop in Honley, near Huddersfield. Sound pine doors go in the stripping bath, fragile ones are stripped by hand, and every door is neutralised and dried. Internal pine doors start from £60 and most are ready in 7–10 working days. What is door dipping?
Door dipping is stripping a whole door at once by lowering it into a stripping bath, rather than scraping or burning the paint off by hand. The bath reaches everywhere at the same time: panel corners, beading, the edges of mouldings and the gaps round the panels. That's why a dipped door comes back with its detail crisp again, while a door stripped with a heat gun often keeps paint in every corner.
Dipping isn't the end of the job. Every door is neutralised afterwards and dried before it leaves, so the timber is stable and ready to finish. Detail is always finished by hand. You'll see the full process on our door stripping and dipping service page.
Why do Sheffield's period doors suit dipping?
Sheffield's older housing climbs the hillsides in terraces, and the doors inside them are mostly solid pine that dips well. The suburbs that grew up with the steel trade were built quickly and in volume, so four-panel pine doors are everywhere: on landings, in cellar heads, and on the front of back-to-back and through-terraced houses.
Two things tend to set Sheffield doors apart:
- Heavy paint build-up. Hillside houses get cold and damp, so doors were repainted often, and many were painted over entirely in the post-war decades. A door can have enough gloss on it to hide the mouldings completely.
- Front doors with glass. The larger villas on the south-west side of the city have glazed and stained-glass front doors. These need extra care. If the glass can come out, the door is dipped normally. If leaded glass has to stay in, we strip the door by hand around it.
Is dipping safe for my doors?
Yes, for sound doors, as long as it's done properly. The honest risks with dipping are old animal glue in the joints and thin veneers, which can loosen. That's why every door is checked before it goes anywhere near the bath. Solid pine four-panel doors, the most common doors in Sheffield homes, dip very well.

How much does door dipping cost for Sheffield customers?

How do I get my doors from Sheffield to the workshop?
Most Sheffield customers use one of three routes:
- Bring them to us. The workshop is at Unit 3, Crossley Mills, Honley, HD9 6PL. Two or three internal doors lie flat in most estate cars with the seats down.
- Overnight courier. Fine for cupboard doors, shutters and smaller pieces. Wrap corners and edges well.
- Van collection. For a full house of doors, a front door plus internals, or a staircase, we arrange a collection and include it in your quote.
Before they travel, take off handles, hinges, letterplates and locks, and keep them somewhere safe. If a fitting is painted in or seized, leave it on and tell us.
How long will I be without my doors?
Most doors are ready in 7–10 working days. A full set of doors for a house usually takes about a fortnight. If you've got a decorator or joiner booked in, tell us the date when you ask for a quote and we'll work to it where we can.
What else can we strip for Sheffield homes?

Frequently asked questions
Is door dipping the same as dip and strip?
Yes. "Door dipping", "dip and strip" and "dip stripping" all describe stripping a door in a bath rather than by hand. At Double Dipper, every dipped door is also neutralised, dried and hand-finished.
Will my door warp after dipping?
Solid pine doors that are neutralised and dried properly come back stable. The risk of problems is mainly with glued joints and veneered doors, which is why we check each door first and hand-strip anything that isn't sound.
Can you finish the doors for me?
