The German worktop-and-floor oil house. One of the most durable natural-oil finishes on the market, and the only one we trust on kitchen worktops.
Osmo has been making wood finishes from Warendorf in northern Germany since 1964. Their Top Oil (originally developed for kitchen worktops) is the most popular hardwax oil on the UK market, and is the finish we'd specify for any stripped kitchen worktop that needs to be food-safe and water-resistant. The Osmo Polyx-Oil is the heavier-duty version for floors, and the Osmo Wash and Care is the maintenance cleaner we recommend for any oiled floor.
For worktops, we apply two thin coats of Osmo Top Oil with a lint-free cloth, sanding lightly with a 320-grit pad between coats. For floors, two coats of Osmo Polyx-Oil with a buffing pad. Both finishes are touch-dry in 8–10 hours and at full hardness in 7–14 days. We always recommend a re-oil every 12–18 months for kitchen worktops and every 2–3 years for floors.

Is Osmo Top Oil food-safe?
Yes. Osmo Top Oil is certified to EN 1186 (suitable for contact with food) once cured. We recommend it for kitchen worktops, dining tables, chopping boards and any food-prep surface. Full cure is 7–14 days — keep the surface dry for the first week.
How often do I need to re-oil a worktop finished in Osmo Top Oil?
Every 12–18 months for a kitchen worktop, sooner if it's near a sink or a hob. The re-oil is a one-coat refresh: clean with Osmo Wash and Care, let dry, and apply a thin coat of Top Oil with a cloth. Takes about 30 minutes for a typical kitchen.
Can Osmo Top Oil be tinted?
Yes — Osmo Top Oil is available in clear and a small range of tints (Natural, Acacia, Terra, White, Graphite, etc). The tints add colour while still showing the grain. We stock the clear Top Oil and the Polyx-Oil Tints range. Other tints are available to order, usually within a week.
