Preparation

Ensure all timber surfaces to be treated are fully clean, sound and dry. The moisture content of the timber should not exceed 18% prior to coating.

Bare Timber

All traces of surface dirt and debris, including mould, algae and fungi, must be removed prior to application with a scraper, stiff brush or broom
Areas affected by biological growth should be treated with a suitable mould and mildew cleaner.
Resinous deposits should be removed with a scraper
Always degrease any exposed bare timber surface by wiping with a soft, lint-free cloth dampened with methylated spirits
Any defects in the wood should be filled with Sadolin Wood Filler or Sadolin Stainable Wood Filler
Only use non-ferrous screws, nails and fixings

New Timber

Pre-treat new timber with a suitable preservative , such as Sadolin Quick Drying Wood Preserver, for best protection
Where possible, the wood preservative and Clearcoat should be applied to all parts of the wood prior to fixing in place

Previously Coated Wood

Where there is localised damage, or deterioration has occurred as a result of exposure of the factory coating for longer than 3 months, affected areas should be thoroughly sanded back to a sound substrate and re-coated
Previously coated wood in good condition should only require a light sanding to aid with adhesion
Wash down with warm water and detergent, allowing to dry before application of Sadolin Clearcoat
For surfaces in poor condition, remove any loose, flaking material and any grey, weathered timber by thoroughly sanding in the direction of the wood grain
Do not break through the surface coating
Ensure that all surface dust and debris from sanding is removed before coating with Extra Durable Clearcoat

Base Stained Joinery

If bare, joinery should be patch primed with one or more coats of Sadolin Classic Wood Protection in the appropriate colour to match the existing base stain

Glazing

The backs of new glazing beads, end grains and rebates should be brought to a finish with the full Sadolin Extra Durable Clearcoat system prior to fixing

The use of linseed oil putty or modified, non-setting compounds are not recommended in conjunction with Sadolin wood protection systems

To confirm compatibility, please consult the manufacturer of the relevant glazing material

Silicone glazing materials should only be applied upon completion of the finishing coats

Application

Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the tin at all times.

Do not apply Sadolin Clearcoat if there is a risk of rain, or when air / substrate temperatures are below 8° or above 25° or if the relative humidity is above 80% during application or drying periods. Protect from frost and rain until dry. Failure to meet these requirements may adversely affect the drying, visual quality and durability of the finish.

– Ensure clear coat is thoroughly stirred before and during application
– Apply Sadolin Extra Durable Clearcoat with a good quality, natural bristle brush
– Apply in a full flowing coat, ensuring all surfaces and end grains are fully coated
– Pay special attention to end grain, tops and bottoms of doors, and undersides of sills
– Allow a minimum of 16-24 hours drying between coats
– If applying this product on its own without a base coat, 3 full coats are advised

Please Note: The amount you need may vary depending on surface condition, moisture content, method of application and climatic conditions during application.
Aftercare

Regular Cleaning

For regular cleaning, wooden surfaces can be wiped down with a dampened, lint-free cloth and warm, soapy water.
Maintenance

The need for maintenance is indicated by a lightening in colour, reduction in sheen as the coating erodes, and a loss of water repellent qualities.

When the layer of finish is getting thin, simply wash down with warm, soapy water (mild detergent) and re-coat with 1 or 2 coats of Sadolin Extra Durable Clearcoat.
Repair

When removing organic growths, or greying in the wood, treat with a suitable fungicidal solution and lightly sand the surface
Patch prime the areas where sanded with Sadolin Quick Drying Wood Preserver
After, simply add 1 or more coats of Sadolin Classic Wood Protection or Sadolin Extra Durable Woodstain in the appropriate shade to match existing colour
Then overcoat with Sadolin Extra Durable Clearcoat

If the finish is badly flaking or peeling, to the point where the bare wood is showing through or has started to grey, lightly sand and follow the full Preparation and Application instructions above.
